In addition to in-house moonlighting, residents can participate in external moonlighting once they obtain a license to practice independently. Using graduating residents as a referral source, residents often work in county clinics and other private or public settings. Moonlighting hours are counted towards the resident’s 80-hour work week limit, per ACGME regulations. Residents appreciate moonlighting because it is their first chance to work as an independent psychiatrist without supervision. They also enjoy the extra income it provides, with residents earning up to $225 per hour. Residents who moonlight typically do between 4 to 8 hours per week.
Every year, the Psychiatry Residency Office provides house staff with $3,000 on their Bruin Card to use towards meals in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Cafeteria, CafeMed at the medical school, and 24-hour Subway in the basement of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Your BruinCard is your Passport to Life at UCLA. It serves as your official University identification card/badge, permits access to facilities and special events, and can be used to purchase goods and services throughout the University, Medical Center and Health System.
While on rotations at the VA, you are given $25/day (up to 8 days per month, for a total spend limit of $200 per month) for meals delivered through Uber Eats.
Residents are encouraged to attend conferences for educational, scholarly, and mentorship opportunities. All residents are given 5 conference days that they can use across the entirety of residency. These conference days can also be used to attend workshops or other outside training of interest.
Residents whose work has been accepted for presentation at a conference will get “free” conference days (i.e., their absence will not count against the 5 allotted days). This is meant to incentivize residents to participate in research and to share their findings! The department will make efforts to cover the cost of transportation and lodging as well.
Vacation
Every resident receives 4 weeks (20 work days) of vacation per year.
Sick Leave
12 days per year.
Parental Leave
8 weeks per instance.

UC automatically invests 7.5% of your paycheck in a pre-tax retirement savings account (UCLA Defined Contribution Plan, also known as “Safe Harbor”). You can also make voluntary post-tax contributions to this plan. Additionally, you can contribute an additional portion of your gross salary on a pre-tax basis to different accounts, including a 403(b) and/or 457(b), reducing your taxable income. Taxes on contributions and any earnings are deferred (that is, postponed) until the participant withdraws the money.
For $35/month, you can have access to the following: John Wooden Center (including Strength and Conditioning Zone), Kinross Recreation Center, Drake Track Stadium, Pools, and the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center Lawn and Tennis Courts. There is a 7-day free trial that you can test out prior to purchasing a membership. For more information, click here.
Your USMLE Step 3 and medical licensing fees are covered by the program.
