Categorical Track

Interested in doing research? Research is not limited to only residents in the Research Track! Depending on your particular interests and skills, there is no shortage of opportunities for residents in the Categorical Track to engage in various forms of research as well. See below for a comparison of research opportunities in the Research Track and the Categorical Track.

Categorical Track

13 residents per class (12 categorical, 1 Harbor). 

PGY-1: Core clinical rotations including medicine (4 months), neurology (2 months), and psychiatry (6 months).

PGY-2: Core clinical rotations including inpatient, consult-liaison, and child/adolescent psychiatry. 

PGY-3/4: Outpatient clinical electives. Residents in the categorical or Harbor track can apply for up to 33% time to do research.

Research Track

2 residents per class. Generally suited for those with a PhD (or equivalent) background in research.

PGY-1: Core clinical rotations including medicine (4 months), neurology (2 months), and psychiatry (6 months).

PGY-2: Core clinical rotations including inpatient, consult-liaison, and child/adolescent psychiatry.
Includes 2 blocks of protected research time.

PGY-3/4: Outpatient clinical electives. Residents in the research track are granted up to 50% time to do research across both years.
