Other Tracks

Interested in doing research? Research is not limited to only residents in the Research Track! Depending on your particular interests and skills, there is no shortage of opportunities for residents in the Categorical (Mid-Wilshire, VA, and Westwood) Tracks to engage in various forms of research as well. See below for a comparison of research opportunities in the Research Track and the Categorical Tracks.

Categorical Tracks

24 residents per class (8 each in the Mid-Wilshire, VA, and Westwood Tracks). 

PGY-1: Core clinical rotations including medicine (4 months), neurology (2 months), and psychiatry (6 months).

PGY-2: Core clinical rotations including inpatient, consult-liaison, and child/adolescent psychiatry. 

PGY-3/4: Outpatient clinical electives. Residents in the Categorical Tracks can apply for up to 30% time to do research.

Research Track

2 residents per class. Generally suited for those with a PhD (or equivalent) background in research.

PGY-1: Core clinical rotations including medicine (4 months), neurology (2 months), and psychiatry (6 months). 2 weeks of dedicated research time to identify mentors and set up in a lab.

PGY-2: Core clinical rotations including inpatient, consult-liaison, and child/adolescent psychiatry.
Includes 2 blocks (8 weeks) of protected research time.

PGY-3/4: Outpatient clinical electives. Residents in the Research Track are granted up to 50-60% time to do research across both years.
