Follow Me For a Week

Morning and Afternoon

Every Monday morning and afternoon, I do external moonlighting at a county-contracted mental health clinic. This clinic does great work with the underserved population. The autonomy of practicing independently has been an invaluable experience.

Evening

Try to stay on top of self-care by going to the gym, and then relaxing at home for rest of the night with some readings on psychotherapy and refreshing myself on the status of my therapy patients.

Morning

Tuesday mornings are the dedicated, protected didactic time for the PGY-3 class. Some of the hits this year from our excellent faculty members have been lectures on treatment resistant mood and psychotic disorders, as well as management of severe personality pathologies. Grand rounds occur directly after didactic as well.

Afternoon

This is my dedicated block of time for seeing my long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy patients for the Resident Psychotherapy Clinic. With my patient’s permission, I videotape the sessions to use for supervision.

Evening

After hitting up the gym, I’m back at home winding down for the night with dinner and some high quality Netflix session!

Morning

This morning is spent at the UCLA CBT clinic, where I get in-depth training and direct observation supervision in cognitive behavioral therapy. Time to see two patients for CBT, discussion with my individual CBT supervisor, as well as group supervision are all built into the clinic.

Afternoon

I head over to the WLA VA campus to spend the afternoon in the VA Psychosis Clinic. I get to treat veterans with psychotic disorders in this clinic, and get great supervision on management of psychotic illnesses, including how to use long-acting injectables and clozapine.

Evening

Meet for an hour with my psychodynamic psychotherapy supervisor that’s been arranged via UCLA Psychiatric Clinical Faculty Association. We review the videos from the previous day’s sessions and am able to get direct supervision this way.

Morning

I head over to the WLA VA campus for Primary Care Mental Health Integration Clinic. This clinic serves as a bridge between the primary care teams and the rest of the mental health teams.

Afternoon

First part of Thursday afternoons is spent in Family Therapy Clinic. We watch videotaped therapy sessions by pioneers of the field, followed by lively discussions and role-plays. Later in the afternoon, I attend the Attachment-Based Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy clinic, which is similarly structured with videos of ISTDP sessions.

Evening

Head over to Santa Monica with a co-resident for our weekly group supervision with my second supervisor. It’s a mix of discussion about our therapy patients, as well as pharmacological treatments of various patients we see in our clinics and moonlighting jobs.

Morning

Friday mornings are my dedicated hours spent at the Clinical and Translational Research Center in Semel, where I see patients participating in the numerous clinical studies that are happening here at UCLA.

Afternoon

I then head over to the UCLA General Outpatient Clinic. This is a very busy and challenging clinic, but a place for excellent learning with lots of support from the supervising attendings. It’s great training for a busy outpatient practice.

Evening

After finishing up notes from GOC, I often head out to grab dinner and drinks with my fellow residents as a way to unwind for the week.

Morning

Sleep in! Make myself a hearty breakfast when I do manage to crawl out of bed, and then hit up the gym to burn it off.

Afternoon

Meet up with a good friend from college to go explore different sections of LA. Given that we’re both foodies, we love to hit up hole-in-the-wall places, ethnic restaurants, and new openings to satiate our gluttony.

Evening

Recover from the food coma caused by the afternoon by binge watching TV shows.

Morning

Meet up with a group of my co-resident friends for brunch.

Afternoon

Catch up on chores for the week, like laundry and grocery shopping.

Evening

Usually relaxing at home and resting up for the week ahead.
