Jonathan Heldt is the Program Director of Residency Education at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. He is a southern California native who grew up in Thousand Oaks. He graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry from Pacific Union College before getting his M.D. from Loma Linda University. He completed his psychiatry residency training at UCLA and served as Chief Resident his fourth year. His current clincial work includes being an inpatient psychiatrist at the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital as well as attending in several teaching clinics. He is deeply involved in education at various levels, including being the course chair for both the the Residency Core Curriculum and the Semel Institute Grand Rounds series as well as the director of the Clinician-Educator Concentration. He also serves as a Physician Informaticist for the UCLA Health System which involves navigating the intersection between clinical work and the electronic medical record. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his husband and daughter, sampling the many amazing cuisines that Los Angeles has to offer, traveling whenever he can (Hạ Long Bay, Cape Town, and Madeira are particular favorites), playing board games, and going bike riding.

Associate Program Director
Alaina Burns is the Associate Director of Residency Education. She grew up in New Rochelle, New York and received her B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from Columbia University. She completed her M.D. and M.P.H. at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn before relocating to Los Angeles for the adult psychiatry residency program at UCLA, where she served as Chief Resident during her fourth year. She is the founder and medical director of the Thought Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program, which provides day treatment for individuals with psychosis. She also serves as the Associate Medical Director for the Adult Partial Hospitalization Program and is an inpatient psychiatrist at the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. She enjoys working with individuals with severe mental illness and in hospital settings and has a particular interest in the management of schizophrenia. Dr. Burns loves exploring Los Angeles, cycling, cooking, and spending time with her wife and son.

Sarah Nguyen, MD

Sarah Nguyen is the Associate Director of Residency Education. She grew up in Irvine, CA and received her B.S. in Neurobiology and her M.D. at University of California, Irvine before venturing to the other coast. She moved to New York for her psychiatry residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident of the Psychiatric Observation Suite and immersed herself in psychodynamic psychotherapy, family systems therapy, and integrative care models. She went on to complete her geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and later completed a two-year fellowship in Innovations in Curriculum Design and Teaching Excellence and Medical Education Scholarship through the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. In her prior role as Director of Resident Mentorship and Professional Development, she developed a professional identity formation curriculum. She also serves as the Associate Director of the UCLA Integrative Psychiatry Clinic. Outside of work, she loves exploring the culturally diverse and rich food scene of Los Angeles as well as traveling the world (hiking the mountains of Patagonia and Peru, eating her way through Japan and Vietnam, trekking along the Amalfi Coast as highlights), and being outdoors (cycling, running, and golf).

As Administrative Director, Dulce has overall responsibility for the administration of the UCLA Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship Training Programs. She works directly with the Program Directors to develop and implement all aspects of the curriculum and recruitment.

Denise Aguinaldo (Assistant Program Coordinator)
Denise provides administrative support to the Training Programs and Program Coordinators. She assists in taking care of the day-to-day needs of the trainees and helps coordinate special events, in-house examinations, and fellowship didactic programs.
