Follow Me For a Week

Morning

Today was Labor Day and because I am on a rotation at the VA, this means I get the day off! This morning I get to play a round of golf with my family which really means I get to have a beer and ride in a golf cart while not counting my strokes.

Afternoon

To further my relaxation, I spend some time at the beach in Orange County playing with a friend’s dog and playing Gin Rummy. I like to think I’m half-way decent at cards, but apparently not. I know I should be studying for Step 3 which is in 2 weeks, but wellness is important too.

Evening

After dinner of vegan pulled pork (I swear it was good and I used to be the spokeswoman of carnitas) and an impromptu dish-washing dance party, I hit the road to drive north on the 405 back to LA. Thank god traffic isn’t terrible and I actually make great time. Time to feed the cat and catch up on Bachelor in Paradise.

Morning
I’ve got morning conference at 815am up at Sepulveda VA where I am doing outpatient medicine. The lecture this morning is on the work up of Vertigo. After munching on breakfast and slurping down coffee, I am in Primary Care clinic and I get to see 3 patients.

Afternoon
After noon conference about subacute thyroiditis and a nice lunch of leftovers from the weekend, I am back in Primary Care clinic to see 4 patients. I get to learn about adjusting insulin regimens because my last patient has a HgA1C of 12. I am thankful today for an attending who is happy to take time to teach.

Evening
I get home around 5:30pm and spend a good hour and a half cooking a large meal to last the week. After stuffing myself, my plans to study for Step 3 are thwarted by a more tempting activity of making a good playlist. I then go for a run through Westwood around 9pm and get back to catch up on the finale of Bachelor in Paradise. Don’t judge.

Morning

No morning conference today so I don’t have to be at clinic until 9, which means I can take my time eating breakfast at home and watching the news. This morning I am in infectious disease clinic and saw HIV patients as well as a man with recurrent UTIs.

Afternoon

Noon conference is a fun medical mystery case and I am so glad I brought lunch with me today, those leftovers are really paying off. This afternoon I am in primary care clinic and see only 2 patients because I need to leave early to make it to UCLA for short call. I don’t mind getting out a tad early and am able to catch up with a friend.

Evening

I am on short call from 5-10pm at UCLA and see 2 consults. They ranged the n age from a geriatric patient with schizophrenia to a young woman with substance induced psychosis. In between taking care of these patients I am finally doing some U world questions. Hey maybe Step 3 won’t be so bad! Home by 1015pm and I am able to read and write a while before I force myself to sleep.

Morning

I have a doctor’s appointment this morning so instead of working in clinic I take the morning off to go to my own clinic appointment. My chief at the VA has been very accommodating, so I feel fortunate to have time to take care of my own needs.

Afternoon

I make it back to the VA for noon conference and take care of some primary care patients in the afternoon. I think I am finally getting the swing of things when it comes to health care maintenance! What used to feel like an overwhelming problem list is now something I can tackle efficiently.

Evening

To stave off my guilt, I do some U world questions for a while before a quick dinner of avocado toast. I’ve had the itch to boogie so I head out to Silverlake tonight for a funk night at my favorite bar. It’s free and lots of good vibes, so I get my workout in today with some hard work on the dance floor.

Morning

Thankfully no morning conference today because I needed the little sleep I got. No motivation to make coffee or breakfast so I swing by the grocery store to grab coffee and a scone to munch on in the car. This morning I have primary care clinic again and while some are routine health care maintenance, one was a patient that I was able to counsel at length and felt I made a real difference in his care.

Afternoon

This afternoon I have Pulm clinic so take care of patients with COPD primarily. No noon conference scheduled today so I am able to enjoy my lunch outside under the shade of the trees. I consider doing U world questions but instead catch up with a dear friend on the phone while soaking in some much needed fresh air.

Evening

After pumping some Montell Jordan in the car on the way home as one should on Friday, I take some time to clean up my place and go for a run. Some friends want to explore a new jazz spot so I join them for a night of live music. I will be on overnight call tomorrow night so I don’t waste time with guilt about not studying, there’s always tomorrow.
